Trap shooting competition added to Tulare County Fair line-up

TULARE – The Tulare County Fair this year will hold a Shooting Sports competition for youth involved in the 4H shooting project in Tulare and Kings counties.

Pre-registration is required by Friday, Aug. 14. Entry forms are available on the Fair’s web site, The entry fee is $20 per person. The match will be held at Tulare County Trap Club in Visalia on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Awards will be presented in each class, from first through fifth places; a 4-H overall champion will receive a buckle. For information on the competition, contact the Tulare County Fair, 686-4707.

“The Tulare County Fair is the logical place for 4H kids to show what they have been learning all year,” explained Travis Seymore, whose son, Hunter, competes in trap shooting through 4H. “For some kids, the trap shooting competition will be the only event they participate in all year. We will hold it before the start of the Fair so it doesn’t conflict with livestock competitions and other events.”

The trap shooting experience allows kids as young as 9 to learn safe gun-handling practices, as well as hand-eye coordination.

“Trap shooting is an Olympic sport,” Seymore added, “and these kids are passionate about it.”

The 96th annual Tulare County Fair will offer educational activities for children and entertainment including a hypnotist and magic shows, an exotic animal exhibit, a “Wild Science” exhibit, Chinese acrobats and more, all free with gate admission. Antique tractors will be on parade and on display, along with the Great American Duck race (with live ducks), puppets and a family circus with comedians and jugglers.

Headliners on the Budweiser Stage announced to date are classic rockers Foghat on Friday, Sept. 18, and Marty Stuart on Sunday, Sept. 20. All concerts are free with paid gate admission.
