Community, kids pitch in at Tulare County Fairgrounds

TULARE – Adults and students from throughout Tulare County will gather at the Tulare County Fairgrounds to prepare the grounds for the fair, Sept. 13-17.

The community clean-up day will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, and all are welcome to help, noted Pamela Fyock, CEO of the fair.

Volunteers of all ages will help plant flowers, trim bushes and paint, Fyock noted. Tools will be available, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gardening tools.

Students from FFA and 4H programs throughout the county are expected to participate including more than 200 students from St. Aloysius school in Tulare. These volunteers will help prepare the animal pens for the students showing livestock, and students from Redwood High School in Visalia will build new temporary handwashing stations.

FFA and 4H students have been working for months to prepare for the competitions and auction during the fair. The date for the dairy and beef replacement heifer sale and market steers has moved to Saturday, Sept. 16. Buyer registration opens at 10 a.m.; cattlemen’s lunch is at noon, followed by the heifer sale and market steers at 1 p.m.

The Junior Livestock Sale will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17. The morning begins with the JLA Buyers Breakfast at 7:30 a.m., sponsored by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Posse. Buyer registration opens at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Junior Livestock Auction at 10 a.m. Champions will be sold starting at noon. The Junior Livestock Auction lunch begins at noon, sponsored by the Tulare County Farm Bureau.

The sale will include a new FFA ag mechanics silent auction. Items for auction may include barbecues, tables and trailers, all made by students.
