Tulare County Fair announces Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters

TULARE – The Boxmasters, an American roots-rock band that features Academy-award winning actor Billy Bob Thornton, will perform on Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Tulare County Fair.

Thornton is known for films such as “Sling Blade,” “Armageddon” and “The Man Who Wasn’t There,” as well as appearances on TV shows such as “Fargo,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Trial.”

The three-man band was formed in 2007 and has released three albums, including “Modbilly,” a term they coined as their style of music, which is influenced by ’60s British mod music and Americana music. “Modbilly” claimed number one on the Americana Radio Chart for two weeks and was number 14 on the Americana Music Association Top 100 Albums of the Year. The band’s newest album is “Somewhere Down the Road,” released in April. Thornton, who performs on drums and vocals, has released four solo albums and has performed on numerous recordings.

Boxmasters fans can compete in the pie-eating contest for the chance to win two meet-and-greet tickets, and enjoy reserved seating at the concert. The contest begins at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18. The second prize-winner will receive two barbecue dinners at the fair; third prize will win two funnel cakes. Participants must be 18 years or older. Pre-registration is $10; on-site registration is $15. The concert begins at 8 p.m., free with gate admission.

The Tulare County Fair runs Sept. 14-18. Fair admission is $8 for adults; $5 for children ages 6-12. The fair will offer live local entertainers; new food booths; a two-night monster truck spectacular; a huge carnival with new rides; a carnival area just for young children, and more. Carnival wristbands are available for $20 in advance of the fair or $30 after Sept. 14.
